Kingston protest calls for ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Palestinians

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 05:52:18 GMT

Hundreds gathered in front of Kingston’s city hall on Saturday afternoon in what was the largest protest for Palestinian solidarity that the city has seen to date. The protest was one of many throughout Canada and the world as international pressure demanding a ceasefire continues to mount from Palestinians and allies in all parts of the globe. Since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,400 people, the response from Israel has been relentless and has been responsible for the deaths of over 10,000 Palestinians in the Gaza strip alone. While Israel military forces maintain that they are attempting to avoid civilian casualties in their pursuit of eradicating Hamas, advocates for a ceasefire are skeptical and looking for leaders and politicians to condemn the actions of Israel. In the past week, Israel bombed multiple refugee camps, saying that the targets were Hamas operatives but killing hundreds of Palestinian civilians in the process according to offici...

Denver giving machines provide easy opportunity for local, global donations

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 05:52:18 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- If giving to charity was as straightforward as using a vending machine, how likely would you be to donate that way?In Denver, the machines have been popular ways to easily give back since they were "unwrapped" in December 2019. Last year, the machines garnered over $267,000 in donations. Giving machines globally have collected over $22 million since their introduction in 2017. Why are buildings lit green in Denver this week? This year, four machines are going to be located at the entrance of the Cherry Creek North Winter Wanderland Holiday Market, near 2nd Avenue and Fillmore Street. The machines will be ready for donors on Nov. 16-Dec. 24.Participants get to "choose an item, change a life," and can also donate online if it's too difficult to make it to an in-person machine. Donors can receive text or email receipts for workplace matching programs or tax deductions. This year's charities include five new Colorado-based groups and two global groups. The charities ar...

GOP Rep. Ken Buck plans to challenge party's direction under Trump as he leaves House

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 05:52:18 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Ken Buck has had enough. When the Colorado Republican announced this past week that he would not seek reelection, he began with the type of criticism of Democratic policies that is standard fare for a hard-line conservative. But then Buck turned his ire to fellow Republicans, spending most of the three-minute announcement video accusing them of being “obsessively fixated on retribution and vengeance for contrived injustices of the past.”Buck's scorched-earth approach caught few on Capitol Hill by surprise. With a deadpan demeanor, an independent streak and a background as a federal prosecutor, Buck has gained national prominence as a House Republican fed up with Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden and the Trump allies in Congress who amplify them. It's a stand few others in the GOP are taking and is a remarkable turn that shows just how deeply Trump's once-fringe lies about that race have settled into the Republ...

On Oct. 26, officials reported that a Mooney M20E crash-landed just before 2:30 p.m. at the airport, located at 101 SW 77th Way. As neighbors heard the plane crash, the sound of impact reverberated through the area. The plane came down on the east side of the airport, just feet away from Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue’s station.Michael David was working on the next level of his certification when he had to maneuver the plane out of harms way when it starting having problems. “I’ve already had people say, ‘Hey, maybe next time you should fly with two engines, so if one goes out, you have another backup,'” David said. The 34-year-old only suffered a broken heel when he crash landed his small plane at the airport. “It was a little bit windy that day, but the winds were in favor, so they were right down the...

Battenfeld: Michelle Wu faces test of clout and power in Boston municipal election

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 05:52:18 GMT

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, using old school hardball tactics, is pushing for a clean progressive sweep in Tuesday’s city council election to consolidate and increase her political power.Wu is backing four liberal candidates that if elected would take the council even farther left and expand her clout on the dysfunctional and sometimes prickly 13-member body.Wu has generally gotten her way on the council but has faced some resistance that forced her to use her veto power. If some of her endorsed candidates don’t win, it could be viewed as a sign that her electoral muscle is not as strong as some believe. But if she gets a sweep of all her candidates, it would give her enormous clout on the council and in the state and allow her even to groom a successor if she wants. The council votes in January on a new president that would take over City Hall in case of any mayoral vacancy.Wu has batted away rumors that she’s looking to leave her mayoral job but she might have an interest in ensuring t...

Police officers removed a small group of pro-Palestinian protesters from Boston City Hall Monday, after they interrupted a press conference to demand that U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren call for an immediate cease-fire in Israel and Gaza, where the deadly fallout from the Hamas terrorist attack continues. The calls for a “cease-fire now” began after proponent U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, who has signed onto a House resolution calling for such action, stepped up to the podium to deliver remarks at an unrelated morning press conference, and as Warren, who had already spoken, was leaving the City Hall Mezzanine.“Senator Warren, we ask for a cease-fire in Gaza,” one of the protesters said, a demand that was followed by chants of “cease-fire now.”Amid the chants, a woman shouted, “We are killing children,” followed by another activist directly addressing Warren again, after the senator had already left the area.“Thanks, Congresswoman Pressley,” the protester said. “We ask Senator Warren to do t...
