Home decor: Lessons learned from 2023, from moving concierges to second homes

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:54:32 GMT

Over the last 12 months, we’ve covered a lot of home topics, from the philosophical (the meaning of home) to the practical (preventing household accidents). As I wrap up the year with this two-part retrospective, here are six of my favorite findings from the second half of 2023:In July, after nearly 30 days of non-stop travel, I rediscovered how much I love being home. Doing simple tasks, like feeding the dogs, drying the dishes and making the bed, made me almost tearful and reminded me how important small rituals are.Lesson: It’s easy to take things for granted, so I listed 21 reasons I love being home, from having my whole wardrobe available to seeing the familiar view out my windows and knowing no one else in the world has the same view.In August, lightning struck a cable line between my house and my neighbor’s, zapping both. My neighbor’s house bore the brunt. They lost their air conditioner, three TV boxes, internet, cable, water heater, and smart lighting system for an e...

By Marshall Cohen, Zachary Cohen, Jeremey Herb and Katelyn Polantz | CNNTwo days before the January 6 insurrection, the Trump campaign’s plan to use fake electors to block President-elect Joe Biden from taking office faced a potentially crippling hiccup: The fake elector certificates from two critical battleground states were stuck in the mail. So, Trump campaign operatives scrambled to fly copies of the phony certificates from Michigan and Wisconsin to the nation’s capital, relying on a haphazard chain of couriers, as well as help from two Republicans in Congress, to try to get the documents to then-Vice President Mike Pence while he presided over the Electoral College certification. The operatives even considered chartering a jet to ensure the files reached Washington, DC, in time for the January 6, 2021, proceeding, according to emails and recordings obtained by CNN.The new details provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the chaotic last-minute effort to keep Donald Trump in office....

As South Korean police on Thursday defended their aggressive investigation of “Parasite” star Lee Sun-kyun for alleged drug use, the country’s entertainment industry was reeling from his death, in part because he is the latest popular performer to die under tragic circumstances in recent years.Prior to Lee’s death Wednesday, 11 other prominent South Korean actors, musicians and other performers — most in their 20s and 30s — have died in suspected suicides, accidents and other incidents, one of which was a homicide and others that have been labeled “mysterious,” according to a list compiled by the Daily Mail. It’s believed that the 48-year-old Lee died by suicide, as the film and TV actor reportedly despaired over the highly publicized nature of the police investigation, which had forced him to drop out of a major film project in October and was causing serious damage to his reputation. This image released by Neon shows Sun-kyun Lee...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The circumstances are quite a bit better for Detroit coach Dan Campbell since the previous time the Lions visited his home state. The Texas native has led the Lions to their first division title in 30 years, and the NFC North champs aren’t out of the running for the top seed in the NFC heading into Saturday night’s visit to the Dallas Cowboys.A season ago, the Lions lost to Dallas, where Campbell spent three of his 10 seasons an NFL tight end, to drop to 1-5 — and 4-18-1 since he took over as coach.Detroit is 19-7 since then, and headed to the playoffs for just the fourth time in 24 seasons. The Lions (11-4) share the best record in the NFC with San Francisco and Philadelphia.Campbell’s focus is more on the second seed than the top spot and the bye that goes with it.“We checked the box on one thing and now it’s to the next one and so at this point, now, we’re fighting for the two seed,” Campbell said. “If you’re able to get to the one, so be ...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown wears No. 33 in honor of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Sammy Baugh, who finished his college career sharing MVP honors in the inaugural Cotton Bowl 87 years ago. When Brown becomes the first Buckeyes quarterback to make his first career start in a bowl, it will be in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night against ninth-ranked Missouri.“What an experience for me, and pretty cool story to go along with that,” said Brown, the 20-year-old sophomore who hasn’t been in a game since Oct. 21, but takes over after Kyle McCord left Ohio State earlier this month for Syracuse.“He’s a super bubbly, joyous guy to be around,” receiver Emeka Egbuka said. “Great personality. I love that, and I think he’s a great player.”The seventh-ranked Buckeyes (11-1) are playing for the first time since their 30-24 loss at Michigan in the regular-season finale matching undefeated teams, costing them the opportunity to play for the Big Ten ti...
