What is it about the holidays that makes wine lovers think of cabernet? Is it all that baking spice that is often prevalent in California red blends? The fact that many Christmas dinners are centered around prime rib? Or the fact that people love sitting around the fire after dinner opining on the old days over some well-aged wine and a chocolate truffle or two? Even brandy-soaked fruitcake can be a good pairing. Just don’t get too close to the fire.Marty Mathis of Kathryn Kennedy has a locally grown cabernet on special, including the 2019 Lateral (regularly $42, sale $30) and the always tempting 2021 Small Lot Cabernet, made from backyard vineyards that dot the hills above Silicon Valley ($46, sale $30). [email protected] cabs to consider are Thomas Fogarty’s cedar- and pine-framed 2016 Gist Ranch Cabernet, Mount Eden’s 2018 Estate Cab and a double magnum of House Family 2012 Estate Cab for $375 (regularly $500). NEW YORK (AP) — The day before Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy he was asked if he would return to LSU for another season next year.“I can’t,” he said.Oh, right. The careers of college quarterbacks might feel endless these days, but even with the bonus COVID year the NCAA handed out for those in college in 2020, Daniels is done after playing five seasons.Fellow Heisman finalist Bo Nix of Oregon is also finished after five years. Injuries allowed Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. to play six years. He, too, will be getting a job next year — most likely in the NFL.Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was the only Heisman finalist with eligibility remaining. He has said he hasn’t decided on a return, but as a likely top five draft pick there probably aren’t enough NIL dollars to lure him back to Columbus for another season. With 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams off to the NFL, too, the 2024 Heisman race looks wide open.INCUMBENT QBsAlabama’s Jalen Mil...

The Dodgers gave Shohei Ohtani $700 million to hit and pitch — but also because he can sell

PHOENIX (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s jaw-dropping $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers has some similarities to other contracts for the world’s biggest sports stars, including soccer icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes. In terms of his marketability, experts point to another name. The real comparison? Try Taylor Swift. The global music sensation’s broad appeal — one that bridges the gap between generations and expands to other countries — is an extremely rare phenomenon that Ohtani shares.
